Available season datasets

The years below come from stored records for each data group. Availability means records exist; it does not guarantee every statistic is filled for every player or year. These files contain regular-season totals and MLBDB contact calculations where full game records have been checked. Contact values stay blank until every completed game in the selected period has been checked. The player table shows the number of checked games and the contact update time.

Use the data correctly

One player, one combined record
A row represents one player in one data group, season and period. Team labels do not split the totals into separate team stints. Two-way players can have both batting and pitching records.
Stable IDs for joining files
playerId and teamId are MLB identifiers. Join player records using playerId and the matching season and period, rather than player names. The team ID describes the row's team association.
Missing is different from zero
The tables show N/A for unavailable or undefined statistics; CSV cells are blank. A zero is a recorded numeric result. Quality starts remain unavailable when the required starting-appearance coverage is incomplete.
Innings are recorded in outs
6.2 innings means six innings and two outs, or 20 outs. Use the integer outs column for calculations: ERA = 27 × earned runs ÷ outs. Do not treat 6.2 as a decimal number of innings.
Percentages have a defined scale
K%, BB%, QS% and catcher CS% use 0–100: 25 means 25%. AVG, OBP, SLG, OPS and fielding percentage use their ordinary rate values: 0.300 means a .300 average. K−BB% is a difference in percentage points and can be negative.
Playing time and qualification
Downloads here include all players with stored records. Comparison tables can apply minimum PA or IP. Qualified season hitting and pitching views require the stored workload qualification; an unknown isQualified value is blank. Fielding comparisons have no default workload minimum.
Dates describe the snapshot
season, group and range identify the dataset. startDate and endDate describe the recorded period when available; updatedAt is the source refresh time. A file downloaded today is not a record of what was known on an earlier date.
Source and calculation coverage
Source: MLB statistics and MLBDB calculations from recorded counts. The source column identifies this in the file; schemaVersion identifies the export format version. The dictionary below covers the 596 metrics displayed in our leaderboards; exports also retain additional source columns.

How advanced statistics are calculated

MLBDB calculates these statistics from the recorded counts for the selected period. Rates are calculated after combining those counts, including doubleheaders and traded players' season totals. Displayed values are rounded; CSV downloads retain calculation precision.

Contact quality
MLBDB calculates ball speed, launch angle, hard-hit percentage and sweet-spot percentage from raw game measurements. EV balls counts balls with recorded speed; LA balls counts balls with recorded angle. Each percentage uses its own measured sample. Missing measurements are left out, never counted as zero. Season contact-rate leaderboards require 100 measurements; player tables show everyone unless you enter a minimum.
Contact average samples
Average and maximum exit velocity, and average launch angle, exclude balls that MLB labels as bunts. Unknown bunt labels are retained. Avg EV balls and Avg LA balls show the measurements used for these averages. An empty sample is N/A. Hard-hit and sweet-spot percentages still use all balls with the required measurement.
Pitch arsenals
Pitchers have a Pitch arsenal view with a pitch-type selector. MLBDB counts recorded pitch types from completed games. Usage divides by all delivered pitches, including unknown types. Speed is in miles per hour, spin in turns per minute, and extension in feet toward home plate from the pitching rubber. Averages use measured pitches only; count columns show their samples. Whiff% divides misses by swings at that type. Season rate leaderboards require 100 observations in the matching sample. Pitch labels can be revised. CSV includes all pitch types, measurement counts, methods and exact game coverage.
Pitch movement
Movement describes how a pitch bends away from its initial flight direction, in inches. Positive sideways movement is to the pitcher's right when looking toward home plate; negative is left. Positive vertical movement is upward; negative is downward. The table shows vertical movement both with gravity and with gravity's effect removed. Removing gravity does not mean the pitch actually rose. MLBDB averages the recorded full-flight measurements, with a separate count for each one. Missing measurements stay N/A, and recorded zeroes count. Larger or smaller movement is not automatically better. These calculations have their own version and game coverage. Exact release positions are not included because the saved coordinates do not directly measure the release point.
Pitch discipline
MLBDB counts delivered pitches in completed games, including bunts, pitchouts and pitches from turns ended by a baserunner out. Automatic balls and strikes are excluded. Whiff% is misses per swing. SwStr% is misses per pitch. Contact includes ordinary fouls. Caught foul tips count as whiffs. CSW% combines called strikes and misses. Chase% is swings per pitch outside the zone. Zone% uses pitches with usable locations; Z-Swing%, Z-Contact% and O-Contact% use their matching pitch or swing counts. Zone rates need at least 95% location coverage. First delivered strike% uses first delivered pitches, including those put in play and unfinished turns that had a pitch. Turns with no delivered pitch are excluded. Each pitch stays with its batter and pitcher even during substitutions. Season rate leaderboards require 100 of the pitches or swings used to calculate that rate. Minimum pitches starts blank. CSV includes the method and exact game coverage. For 2018 through 2024, MLBDB estimates pitch locations inside or outside the zone using recorded coordinates and batter zone heights. From 2025, MLB's recorded zone labels are used. These locations do not describe the umpire's call.
Hit direction estimates
MLBDB estimates pull, center or opposite-field direction using a ball's recorded chart location and the hand used to bat on that play. Pull means left field for a right-handed hitter and right field for a left-handed hitter. Opposite field is the reverse. Center means toward the middle of the field. Switch hitters are checked separately on every play. Rates divide by Located balls and show N/A below 95% location coverage. Missing details and locations outside the area used by this method stay unmapped. These are estimates from chart locations, not measured flight angles or a rating of player quality. Season rate leaderboards require 100 located balls. Minimum located balls starts blank. CSV includes the direction method version. The updated estimate was tested on seasons it was not built from. Chart locations do not settle every ball's direction, so a ball near a dividing line can land in the neighboring group.
Batted-ball types
MLBDB gives every batted ball with a recorded type exactly one type: ground ball, line drive, fly ball, popup or bunt. Hits, outs and home runs all count. Bunt grounders, bunt line drives and bunt popups count only as bunts, and fly balls do not include popups. GB%, LD% and FB% divide each type by all classified balls. Popups and bunts stay in that total but are not in these three rates, so they add up to less than 100%. GB/FB divides ground balls by line drives, fly balls and popups together. Popup/FB% divides popups by fly balls and popups together. The source does not verify whether each popup stayed in the infield, so this is not an official infield-fly percentage. HR/FB divides all home runs by fly balls and popups together, so it can exceed 100%. Missing types are counted separately and make the player's ball-type rates N/A. Speed and angle measurements are not needed. Season leaderboards require 100 classified balls for GB%, LD% and FB%, 100 fly balls and popups for Popup/FB% and HR/FB, or 100 line drives, fly balls and popups for GB/FB. The optional Minimum batted balls filter starts blank and uses the number of classified balls. CSV includes the ball-type method version.
MLBDB barrels
A barrel is a ball hit very hard at an angle suited to deep hits. MLBDB counts these using recorded speed and angle. MLBDB Barrel% is the share of balls with both measurements that qualify under our rule. EV+LA balls shows that sample size. Balls missing either measurement are left out, and an empty sample appears as N/A. For pitchers, these numbers describe balls hit against them. The minimum measured balls filter uses this same sample.
MLBDB barrel zone
We round speed to the nearest whole mph first. An exact half-mph tie goes to the nearest even number, so 98.5 becomes 98 and 99.5 becomes 100. The rounded speed must be at least 98 mph. The recorded angle must be at least the larger of 8 or (124 minus rounded speed), and at most the smaller of 50 or (1.5 times rounded speed minus 117), in degrees. Both edges count. This is MLBDB's rule, applied to the recorded measurements.
Contact dates and precision
Contact values cover the exact selected dates and completed regular-season games. A period stays unavailable until every completed game has been checked. Games still in progress are excluded. Measurement precision, classification rules and sample definitions all affect these values. These are MLBDB's own calculations. CSV contact columns include the contact and barrel methods, update time, checked game count and a fingerprint of the inputs.
MLBDB expected statistics
MLBDB xBA, xSLG and xwOBA are MLBDB estimates from recorded ball speed and angle, plus same-season running speed when available. The formulas were checked on games excluded from fitting. Reviewed seasons cover 2018 through 2026, with a provisional current-season snapshot. Each statistic requires all the contact values used by its calculation. Missing measurements and contacts outside the reviewed range produce N/A for the affected statistic. Real strikeouts, walks and hit-by-pitches remain counted. These are MLBDB estimates describing past contact, not official MLB statistics or forecasts.
Pitcher BABIP
The batting average allowed on balls in play, excluding home runs. It uses opponents' at-bats, hits, strikeouts, home runs and sacrifice flies. It reflects contact quality and defense as well as the pitcher, so it does not measure luck alone.
MLBDB estimated ERA
MLBDB xERA converts unrounded MLBDB expected wOBA into estimated earned runs per nine innings. Each season has its own conversion equation. Reviewed seasons cover 2018 through 2026, including 2019 when the required contact values are complete. The 2026 equation is provisional. Values outside the reviewed expected-wOBA range remain N/A. Error in MLBDB's estimated wOBA also affects xERA. ERA minus MLBDB xERA compares the same recorded pitching totals and is N/A if no pitching outs were recorded or the totals no longer match. These are estimates of past pitching. Small samples can be unstable or unavailable.
FIP
Fielding Independent Pitching uses home runs, walks, hit batters and strikeouts, plus the matching season's league constant. It is on an ERA-like scale, with lower values better. It is not park adjusted and does not predict a pitcher's next game.
wOBA, wRAA and wRC
wOBA gives different batting outcomes different run values. Intentional walks are excluded from its numerator and denominator. wRAA converts wOBA into batting runs above league average; wRC adds the league's scoring baseline. These are batting measures, not total player value. They do not include park adjustments and are different from wRC+.
Season inputs
FIP and weighted batting statistics use each season's published league constant and run weights. The same season's inputs apply to its regular-season daily, recent and season totals. Each export records the calculation method, the status and capture date of the inputs, and the inputs themselves. In-season inputs are provisional and can change after a reviewed update. We keep the published precision, so results can differ slightly from figures that use more precise weights.
Unavailable inputs stay unavailable
A missing season constant, missing count or undefined denominator produces N/A in the table and a blank CSV cell. We do not substitute a different season's weights or treat missing counts as zero. Regular-season constants are not applied to unverified or mixed game types.
Read short periods with care
One game can produce an unusually high wOBA or a negative FIP. A negative wRAA means below-average batting production for that workload. These can be valid results. Check PA, IP and the recorded dates before comparing players.

MLBDB Estimated ERAMLBDB xERAexpectedEra

Estimated earned runs per nine innings, converted from MLBDB's expected wOBA with a separate equation for each season. Available for 2018 through 2026 when every needed contact contribution is available and unrounded expected wOBA is within the reviewed range. The 2026 equation is provisional. This describes recorded pitching; short periods can be unstable or N/A.

ERA Minus MLBDB EstimateERA − MLBDB xERAeraMinusExpected

Recorded ERA minus MLBDB's estimate, using the same completed games. A positive number means more earned runs were recorded than estimated. This does not measure luck alone. N/A when no pitching outs were recorded, the estimate is unavailable, or the saved game totals disagree with the latest totals.

Opponents' MLBDB Expected Batting AverageMLBDB xBAexpectedAvg

Estimated hits per at-bat from ball speed, angle and same-season running speed when available. Strikeouts remain at-bats. Each needed contact contribution must be available. Reviewed seasons are 2018 through 2026; the current season is provisional. For pitchers, these are opponents' results. MLBDB estimates describe recorded contact, not future performance.

Formula: Estimated hits in at-bats ÷ at-bats

Opponents' MLBDB Expected Slugging PercentageMLBDB xSLGexpectedSlg

Estimated bases from hits per at-bat. Singles count once, doubles twice, triples three times and home runs four times. For pitchers, these are opponents' results. MLBDB estimates describe recorded contact, not future performance.

Formula: Estimated total bases in at-bats ÷ at-bats

Opponents' MLBDB Expected Weighted Batting AverageMLBDB xwOBAexpectedWoba

Combines reconstructed expected contact values with recorded walks and hit-by-pitches. Walks and hit batters use the same season's batting weights. Intentional walks are excluded. Every needed contact value must be available. For pitchers, these are opponents' results. MLBDB estimates describe recorded contact, not future performance.

Opponents' Batting Average Minus ExpectedAVG − MLBDB xBAavgMinusExpected

Recorded batting average minus the estimate, using the same completed games. A positive number means the actual result was higher. This does not measure luck alone. For pitchers, these are opponents' results. MLBDB estimates describe recorded contact, not future performance.

Opponents' Slugging Minus ExpectedSLG − MLBDB xSLGslgMinusExpected

Recorded slugging minus the estimate, using the same completed games. A positive number means more bases were recorded than estimated. For pitchers, these are opponents' results. MLBDB estimates describe recorded contact, not future performance.

Opponents' Weighted Average Minus ExpectedwOBA − MLBDB xwOBAwobaMinusExpected

Recorded weighted batting average minus the estimate, using the same completed games and batting weights. For pitchers, these are opponents' results. MLBDB estimates describe recorded contact, not future performance.

Opponents' Expected-Stat Measurement CoverageMeasured%expectedCoveragePct

The share of eligible batted balls with both speed and angle recorded. Each expected statistic shows N/A if any contact value it needs is missing or outside model support. For pitchers, these are opponents' results. MLBDB estimates describe recorded contact, not future performance.

Opponents' Measured Balls Used in EstimatesModel ballsexpectedMeasuredBalls

Eligible batted balls with both speed and angle recorded. Defensive awards that do not count as at-bats are excluded. For pitchers, these are opponents' results. MLBDB estimates describe recorded contact, not future performance.

Opponents' Balls with Incomplete MeasurementsMissing pairsexpectedFallbackBalls

Eligible balls missing speed, angle or both. These inputs are not filled in. The affected expected statistic is N/A, and the real appearance remains counted. For pitchers, these are opponents' results. MLBDB estimates describe recorded contact, not future performance.

Opponents' Measured Balls Outside Model SupportOutside modelexpectedUnsupportedBalls

Eligible balls with speed and angle but outside the reviewed formula's supported range. Any expected statistic needing that contact value shows N/A. For pitchers, these are opponents' results. MLBDB estimates describe recorded contact, not future performance.
